Background: The Office of Sustainability, the Office of Equity, Diversity and Compliance and the Office of International Education and Development are partnering to create the Local to Global Leadership Award to honor and recognize students who have engaged with our local community in an innovative way and are prepared to expand their work on the global level at an international location. This year’s prize will include a travel grant for the winner to continue their global work.
Eligibility:
- Student must have the ability to travel within one year of receiving the award.
- Student must be enrolled at Appalachian State University during the period of travel as either a graduate or undergraduate student.
- Minimum GPA of 2.75
- Self-nominations are discouraged.
- Nominator may only submit one name.
Guidelines:
- Student has demonstrated scholarship, research, and or engagement on an issue affecting the local community and is prepared to expand their work on the global level at an international location.
Criteria:
- Evidence of scholarship, research and/or engagement affecting the local community and the desire to expand this local initiative at an international location.
2016 Local to Global Leadership Award Recipient - Banna Bazzarie
Banna Bazzarie used her Local to Global award to travel to the Palestinian territories in the West Bank to study and practice Arabic. She also used her award to take Arabic courses in Ramallah. During her time there she connected with her roots and reported that she "learned about the conflict in ways I never expected." She sas the experience "opened my eyes to the harsh realities of the occupation" and all allowed her to connect with people from differing socioeconomic statuses. She reports that her language skills improved tremendously as a result of her time and the Local to Global Award.
