Excursions for International Students, Scholars and the ASU Community
Are you a community member who would like to invite an international student to your house or to an event? Please email the details of the event to isss@appstate.edu.
In the email, please include:
- A description of the event
- The date and time of the event
- Your address and telephone number (this will not be published)
- State whether or not you can pick up the international students or scholars at their homes
- The maximum number of international students or scholars

September 2009
Friday, September 25 at 7:00 pm. Weather permitting Jenny Koehn and Jim Street invite all international students, scholars and host families to their house for a backyard campfire and to eat chili. If you did not receive the evite for this event, but would like to attend, please contact isss@appstate.edu.
Saturday, September 26. 8:30 am. Meredith Casper can take 3 students or scholars to the Watauga Farmer’s Market this Saturday. Looking for fresh and local fruits, veggies, meats and local crafts? Look no further than the Farmer’s Market. It is the place to be on a Saturday morning. Meredith can come and pick you up and drop you off with all of your delicious goods.
Sunday, September 27 at around 1:30. Weather permitting, the family of Carson and Mindy Coatney is planning a 2-3 hour hike on the Parkway. They can take 2-3 students or scholars and they can pick them up and drop them back. They have 3 children so we will not be going super fast. Pack a water bottle, camera and snack.
November 2009-THANKSGIVING BREAK!
Kelley Wolcott, Office Manager for OIED, would like to invite 3 students or scholars to her family's mountain home in Mountain City, TN for a traditional, Thanksgiving dinner. Kelley's husband, John, is a professional chef! This family also likes football, a tradition on Thanksgiving. If you would like to join Kelley, John, their 2 teenage boys and their dogs for Thanksgiving day, please email isss@appstate.edu.
Shari Galiardi and Dave Hutchison would like to invite 2 students to their family Thanksgiving in Boone. Come to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and great company with Shari, Hutch and Shari's parents. Shari and Hutch work on ASU's campus. Shari is ASU's Service Learning Coordinator and Hutch works in Outdoor Programs. If you are interested email isss@appstate.edu.
Mindy and Carson Coatney, owners of Stick Boy Bakery, would like to invite 4 international students and/ or scholars to their house for a traditional Boone Thanksgiving. They have 3 small children. If you are interested email isss@appstate.edu.
Kitty and Mike Rominger would like to invite two students or scholars to their home for a traditional Boone Thanksgiving. Their daughter is fluent in German and their son speaks Japanese. If you are interested contact isss@appstate.edu.
Al and Jackie and I would be pleased to have 4 international students and/ or scholars for Thanksgiving Dinner. They have no other family coming and would enjoy sharing their Thanksgiving feast and conversation with the students and scholars. They can also offer a place to sleep if someone needs it. If anyone wants to stay with them for the weekend, it will be a quiet one. They will be working on school projects and perhaps starting a bit of Christmas decorating or baking. If the weather is nice, they would be glad to take students/scholars for a drive on the parkway and maybe a walk to Linville falls. If the weather does not cooperate, they have a variety of books, places to read and study and TV.They have a sewing machine if anyone needs some mending done. When they go shopping, students/scholars are most welcome to accompany them. If you are interested contact isss@appstate.edu.
Dr. Janet Montgomery from Art Education, would like to host up to 5 international students or scholars for a Thanksgiving meal. If you are at all interested please contact isss@appstate.edu, but you must act fast as they wish to know by Wednesday (Novemeber 17th, 2009)
